How do I update products in bulk in Shopify?
Need to adjust titles, descriptions, or prices for many products at once? This article explains how to efficiently bulk-edit your Everspring product catalog in Shopify using Google Spreadsheets.
Step 1: Export your product data from Shopify
Start by exporting your product list:
-
In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
-
Click Export and choose to export all products as a CSV file.
-
Shopify will email you a download link. Open the email and download the file.
Step 2: Open your file in Google Spreadsheets
We recommend using Google Spreadsheets over Excel due to its reliability and flexibility. To open your file:
-
Create a new spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
-
Click File > Import.
-
Select the downloaded CSV file and import it without making any changes to the import settings.
Your product export is now ready for bulk editing.
Step 3: Make bulk edits safely and efficiently
You can now update fields such as:
-
Titles
-
Descriptions
-
Prices
Important: Keep the handle column intact. Shopify uses this to identify and match products during the import.
Best practices:
-
Remove all columns you are not modifying. For example, if you're updating titles, keep only the
handle
andtitle
columns. -
For price updates:
-
cost per item
represents the purchase price -
variant price
represents the consumer-facing price -
You can use spreadsheet formulas (e.g., multiply cost prices by 2) to calculate new values
-
-
If you need help rewriting titles or descriptions, you can paste them into ChatGPT and request reformulations, formatting, or SEO improvements.
Step 4: Reimport the updated file into Shopify
After completing your edits:
-
Click File > Download > Comma-separated values (.csv).
-
Go to Products > Import in Shopify.
-
Upload your updated CSV file.
-
Review the import preview and confirm by clicking Import.
Your changes will now be applied. Depending on the size of your catalog, this may take a few minutes.
Test recommendation: If you're new to bulk editing, start with a small test file to verify everything works as expected.
Always keep a backup of your original export before making changes. This ensures you can restore previous data if something goes wrong.
